Cashless Canary
On January 13, 1968, Johnny Cash held two live performances at California’s Folsom State Prison, recording a total of 15 songs for his iconic album At Folsom Prison.
The Inspiration: Cash had been fascinated with prison life since seeing the film Inside the Walls of Folsom Prison in 1951, which inspired his 1955 hit song, "Folsom Prison Blues".
The Setlist: The crowd was famously boisterous and engaged, creating an electric atmosphere. The set included prison-themed tracks and was famously closed out with "Greystone Chapel," a song written by Folsom inmate Glen Sherrill.
The Impact: The live album skyrocketed to the top of the country charts, bringing Cash back to massive mainstream prominence and turning him into a cultural anti-hero.
